Yosemite – Climbing, climbing and more climbing!

After leaving Portland we drove the Oregon coast on our way to California. On recommendations we stopped at Cannon Beach, where they filmed some of the movie “Goonies”. The drive was beautiful with amazing coastal views, big trees, and twisting roads.

Now that were in Yosemite we are camping at the famous Camp 4 where climbing history begins in North America. We have been climbing for seven days straight on classic climbing lines established in the 60’s!
Camp 4 is home to many international climbers seeking out similar adventures over rock as us. On our first climbing day we met George, a 58 year old Czech climber, who visited Yosemite 30 years ago. We may return here when we’re 60, just like George.

Yesterday, Dave and I had our first encounters with the bears. While we were belaying each other, on two separate occasions, bears were less than 20 feet away from us looking for food. They know climbers packs are full of yummy calories. Our noise making and other tactics slowly deterred them but left us paranoid for the rest of the day. Hopefully, Yogi and Boo-Boo don’t find us again!

The climbing continues to inspire and challenge us everyday. Tomorrow, an 11 pitch classic is planned, starting our journey at 6am to avoid line ups like Canada’s Wonderland.
